DeSantis irresponsibly making Alcee Hasting’s constituents wait 280 days to elect his replacement is a standard fascist and racist DeSantis move! The people of Florida despise this mobbed-up governor and his lawlessness!

Jonathan's avatar

they win the elections

UpstateNYer's avatar

The people of Florida who re-elected him by 20 points despise him?

Absentee Boater's avatar

It would be remarkable if Hochul didn’t do the same in delaying the election to replace Stefanik. This goes both ways.

ArcticStones's avatar

I don’t believe Hochul can; I would be surprised if she has the power to delay that election for 280 days. In other words: no comparison.

NY has strict laws on when a special election has to be called.

Chavez-DeRemer is coming under scrutiny because of her support for a key Democratic agenda item and concerns that she’d undermine GOP efforts to undo the Biden administration’s labor regulations.

Republicans aghast: Chavez-DeRemer was one of just three GOP co-sponsors of the PRO Act, a bill to expand collective bargaining rights and strengthen the influence of labor unions.

ArcticStones's avatar

Obviously the choice of Lori Chavez-DeRemer is an expression of Trump’s deep empathy, concern and strong support of all those MAGA laborers who voted for him.

/S

Paleo's avatar

No, but it shows that the Teamsters' cold political calculation resulted in some benefit for labor.

Kevin H.'s avatar

Juries out on that. She was representing a tough district before now she's representing the Dump admin and i doubt there's going to be any pro-labor policy.

Darren Monaghan's avatar

Who were the other 2 Republicans on the PRO Act?

Paleo's avatar

I would imagine Brain Fitzpatrick was one.

Darren Monaghan's avatar

If only the rest of the GOP was more like Brian Fitzpatrick, this current feeling of the incoming trifecta in January would be nowhere near as bad as it is!! 😢🇺🇲

Absentee Boater's avatar

Fitzpatrick and Chris Smith from NJ-04. Van Drew co-sponsored the previous versions of the bill, but didn’t this time around.

One little tidbit I found today is that in 2022 Oakland mayor election there were 810 voters who indicated a preference in subsequent rounds, but not the first round, out of 126,332 total votes cast. I imagine that ratio depends some on ballot design and the total number of people running, (Oakland had 10 people on the ballot,) but it is somewhat more than I would have imagined.

"Suspended" in the results table at the end of the wiki article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2022_Oakland_mayoral_election

Does anybody know if there's a checklist somewhere of the states where the vote is certified and official as opposed to states where more votes are gonna trickle in?

Paleo's avatar

New York certifies before it finishes counting. ;)

axlee's avatar

Cook political tracker map has HI NV WY ND OK AR LA MS GA FL SC DE RI VT MI NH already certified.

State websites say SD and MN are certified as well.

UT ME AZ KY are due today.

Mark's avatar

Thanks much! Want to do tabulations on states that are official but not jump the gun on those who aren't. Wasserman's checklist used to help a lot with this but now it's paywalled.

WAPO's and AEI editorialists Thiessen and Pletka suggest that Biden should pardon Trump, and that he should have done that as soon as soon as Trump announced he was running.

Finally stopped laughing.

My fear is we'll see AEI crazy ideas implemented for the next 2-4 years that we'll need trifecta control to reverse.

Kevin H.'s avatar

Why, it's not like he's ever held accountable for any of his crimes, maybe one day.

Mike in MD's avatar

Thiessen has written exactly one good column recently, that being about concerts he's been to. ("See your music heroes before it's too late", he urged.)

I'll also give him partial credit for his annual list of the 10 best and worst things the president did. It must have strained him each year to come up with 10 good things about Biden or 10 criticisms of Trump, but he did.

culturejammer's avatar

I had the chance to see Iron Maiden two weeks ago. As a fan of their music from 40 years ago, sure see your heroes before they die, but also, maybe don't

A commenter to their article on WaPo (newobserver1) offered a far better proposal:

"Here is an alternative suggestion for President Biden: Trump has threatened vengeance on all those he thinks did him wrong. President Biden could compile a list of those Trump has threatened such as Jack Smith, Liz Cheney, Nancy Pelosi, Mike Pence, other political figures, former members of the military, reporters, DOJ employees, journalists etc. Then he could offer them broad pardons (much as Ford granted to Nixon who had not been charged) effectively preventing Trump from ordering "his" DOJ to go after them.

"President Biden could announce the pardons, even if turns out to be a hundred or more, on January 19, 2025 (or maybe January 20 at 11:00 a.m) making it clear that he was using his official powers to protect innocent people from potential abuse."

Zero Cool's avatar

Biden should also pardon Edward Snowden. The US was able to cut a deal with Julian Assange, Snowden should be next.

Obama commuted Chelsea Manning's sentence before he left office.

sacman701's avatar

Snowden is evil and a shameless Putin stooge. Give him nothing whatsoever under any circumstances.

Zero Cool's avatar

How is he a stooge besides residing in Russia and speaking his mind?

Also, with what Assange has done with Wikileaks, it's done far more damage than Snowden ever did with his agenda.

Jonathan's avatar

How the hell do you know that??????????? C'mon man ..

sacman701's avatar

I don't see how that could do any good. All it would do is send the message that powerful people shouldn't be held accountable.

Paleo's avatar

True. But I think the Supreme Court and Trump have already made that clear.

The Democratic Party will soon be choosing new leadership. Jennifer Rubin makes a strong case that the new Chair of the DNC should be Ben Wikler, the widely-lauded Chairman of the Wisconsin Democratic Party. As Rubin points out, Wikler is far better than Rahm Emmanuel or Martin O’Malley. I fully agree with Jen Rubin!

That needs to change. Going forward, organizing and rejuvenating the Democratic Party will be Job #1 – which is why Ben Wikler is the far better choice.

Jonathan's avatar

Disagree; the post of DNC Chairman (especially when they are the out party) is a mainly fundraising post

Zero Cool's avatar

That was not the case when Howard Dean was DNC Chair. It was more than just simply a fundraising role for him.

Paleo's avatar

Just about anyone’s better than Rahm Emmanuel.

Ethan (KingofSpades)'s avatar

Are you sure? Chuck Rocha embezzled funds of the union he ran.

I'm all for news faces. Enough with these 2000s era reruns.

More news from Orange County:

Today there were more votes tallied in CA-45 in OC. The 354 total votes were won by Tran 195-159. That brings his margin up to 581 votes. The delay in the race being called means that he missed out on the office lottery for new members. Tran will take over Steel's office in January.

Nothing from Los Angeles County today. They will update tomorrow or Wednesday before going off on the weekend.

No news from CA-13 at this point either (from the SoS site). I think that those five counties will report out votes just before the holiday weekend.

Paleo's avatar

Looks like Duarte netted a 3 vote gain.

Zack from the SFV's avatar

Those are from San Joaquin County: 100 votes for Gray, 103 votes for Duarte.

I didn't think there would be updates later last night. Also S. J. has been one of Gray's better counties but not consistently in the updates.

If Gray is going to make a move it needs to be soon. He is running out of time and ballots to count. He is now at -207 margin.
