That’s a damning court ruling against the State of Alabama. Any guesses as to what corrective requirements the Trump Regime will impose if Alabama is brought back under federal supervision?

Naturally I am far more hopeful with regards to remedies the court itself may impose!

If it's up to the administration, which I think it is, Alabama won't be brought back under federal supervision.

It is doubtful that the DOJ's Civil Rights Division, headed by election-denier Harmeet Dhillon, whose stated priorities are "Keeping Men out of Women's Sports” and “Ending Radical Indoctrination in K-12 Schooling,” will be very zealous in enforcing the court's ruling against Alabama.

The thing about preclearance is that it's reactive, not proactive. So yes, of course Trump's DOJ would greenlight everything AL would want to do if it gets bailed back in, but Trump won't be in charge of DOJ forever.

One thing the next Democratic president needs to absolutely 100% do “norms and precedent” be damned is fire every single one of the department people appointed by Republicans (obviously not GOP federal workers, but those in power making key decisions).

Every time a Democrat does the “right” thing in office, Republicans don’t and those people in government hamstring Democratic policy priorities (see James Comey, Chris Wray, Louis Dejoy, Jay Powell, Robert Mueller, Merrick Garland as the most obvious examples). Get these people out of government policy on the 1st day in office. It’s that important.

Maybe Biden would have had 2 more years with a trifecta. Maybe Trump wouldn’t have been allowed to run again. Maybe he never would have become president. That’s an enormous outsized negative impact on the party coming tied to only a handful of people that Democrats should have fired immediately and these people never do the right thing when it matters the most.

I’m so sick and tired of these people staying for some old fashioned idea of stability that doesn’t exist anymore. Fire. Them. ALL!

No way. That’s ridiculous. The federal workforce does what their bosses tell them (like any good employee would) and they have a ton of experience that’s invaluable to getting the priorities Democrats want done effectively and efficiently. We can’t just suddenly decide half or a quarter of federal workers can no longer be employed because of partisan affiliation.

They’d take the government to court and win, even if progressive Democratic justices are hearing the case. These people don’t suddenly decide not to do their jobs in the way Democrats want them to because they’re Republicans and if they did, they’d get weeded out pretty quickly. They do what they’re asked to, which means the leaders need to go. Different boss = different job description for them to follow.

Something tells me that the officials in Alabama knew this decision would be defeated in court and anticipated the strong possibility that the Department of Justice under Trump would look the other way to their corruption when a remedy would be proposed. That is, unless the courts somehow have a way to enforce this ruling without the involvement of the feds. Someone please update and correct me on this. Either way it seems this may get revisited again in 4 years give or take.

Suggestion: In the months ahead, as the consequence of Trump tariffs are increasingly felt by Americans, Democratic candidates have a unique opportunity to tar their Republican opponents.

For instance, when Congressman Buddy Carter, who is challenging Senator Jon Ossof, touts himself as a "MAGA warrior for Donald Trump", the Ossof campaign can brand him as "a MAGA warrior for Trump’s tariffs". "Buddy Carter supports the Republican tariffs that are devastating your wallet." "Carter and the tariffs he supports are the reason everything costs more."

Make every national Republican politician own these tariffs and the damage they’re doing to the USA!

LOUD MESSAGE FROM THE KING OF NORWAY ON VE DAY

Yesterday, on the occasion of VE Day which marks Allied victory in World War II, King Harald V of Norway held a powerful speech – and it is getting unusually much attention.

King Harald held this speech in Trandumskogen, often referred to as "The Death Forest". This is where soldiers of Nazi Germany, who were occupying Norway, executed 194 resistance fighters and buried them in mass graves.

Here is part of the King’s speech, including words that are widely seen as addressed to Trump:

.

"Today we celebrate 80 years since the jubilant day in our country's history: the liberation from occupation on May 8, 1945. But it was not a day of joy for everyone. The war continued to cast long shadows over the lives of innocent people: Jews, queers, Roma… Survivors who had lost loved ones. For some, the war never ended.

"What is worth fighting for today? When we talk about protecting our freedom and values, what does that really mean?

"In the world, it means, among other things, showing mutual respect for national borders. That we respect international laws and rules. That we can cooperate and trust each other within a community of allied states.

"In Norway, it means having a democratic government where the majority recognizes that one of their most important tasks is to take care of the minority. Where no one is above the law, and where all people are of equal value.

"In our local environment, in our everyday lives, we protect our values by avoiding spreading lies, but by speaking the truth. By taking responsibility for our own mistakes and actions. By caring and being kind to each other. By not only being concerned with protecting ourselves, but also taking care of others around us."

No, King Harald of Norway chooses what he wants to say and how to say it, although I am sure he has good help from his staff.

(On a side note, dyslexia runs in the family; his father King Olav, and his son, Crown Prince Haakon, are both afflicted, although I don’t think the present King is.)

Alaska and Maine are mavericky, independence-minded states, primed to elect an independent politician to begin with. Jesse Ventura was a celebrity and an anomaly. Lincoln Chafee and Charlie Crist were elected as moderate Republicans and switched later. Everything is so polarized now, especially in swing states like Michigan, and Dems are desperate for leverage right now, so it's really difficult to see a path.

While I agree he’s definitely the strongest candidate to run for Senate, it’s a tough call between a no chance federal statewide race and a slight chance conservative Democrat wave recipient to pad a hopeful House majority.

He’s the type of Democrat that used to be able to hold red districts like this through good political years and bad based on a personality brand separate from the toxic party brand. Can that actually still happen in today’s America? Not a clue.

For me though, I’d lean wanting him to run for the House, because even a tsunami won’t elect a Democrat federally statewide in Kentucky, whereas a Trump +15 district could be on the outskirts of being in play, like an OK-05 shocker.

Internal polling shows Fetterman’s support is tanking with Democrats in his backyard: (even before the NYMag piece) https://www.politico.com/news/2025/05/09/senator-fetterman-poll-pittsburgh-pennsylvania-00337505

https://www.politico.com/news/2025/05/08/fetterman-island-new-york-article-00333777

“I’ve seen politics be hard on people so I’m concerned for the Fettermans,” Lamb said. “I think I share the feeling of many that I don’t know his true condition, but if he is okay, as he says, I don’t understand why he’s rarely seen in our state and he doesn’t answer constituent questions on things like his vote for Pam Bondi or his advocacy for war with Iran.”

Asked if he is weighing a challenge against Fetterman, Lamb said he is “not considering any campaign right now” and that his recent appearances at public demonstrations against Trump are aimed at “just trying to help others.”

At this point, Lamb entering the 2028 primary seems to the most plausible outcome. Anyways, it would be good for us to have another predictable vote and a normal moderate Democrat for our next presidential agenda. Hopefully, Bernie and AOC don't interfere in this one.

Don't know about Sanders but AOC hasn't exactly been singing Fetterman's praises lately. Yeah, they endorsed him in the 2022 primary but I wouldn't make that into much of a mark of shame. Everyone thought he'd be in the more progressive camp. The people that preferred Lamb back then weren't doing so because they felt Fetterman's ideological appearance would prove to be a facade, but because they thought that ideology would be an electoral detriment and/or they disagreed with it as well.

AOC even made a public apology to Lamb over that primary.

I think we'd want AOC to "interfere" ...

No, like they might back a Progressive like Deluzio who now represents Lamb's district and split the anti-Fetterman vote.

The progressive media branded him as a Sinema which was not true. He had voted with Biden 100 percent of the time and espoused many liberal positions minus Medicare for All and the progressive version of Green New Deal (he supported BBB). Lamb was tailor made for representing a swing state like Pennsylvania.

In all fairness to AOC, she supported Fetterman because he was traditionally on the progressive wing like her. He was supported by Bernie for the Senate in the primary back in 2016 and supported Bernie for POTUS as well.

However, I think AOC’s wisely trying to stay away from Fetterman. He just keeps on melting down and is not practicing what he’s preaching.

As someone very against primaries in purple/red seats/states, especially in a state that just tossed a Democrat for a Republican Senator, it’s definitely time to primary Fetterman. The health problems behind the scene for him are scary and I question his ability to run a campaign to win if as the article states, he’s been MIA in PA during what is mostly the easy time period of being a Senator. I hope Lamb primaries him and he gets polling showing he can’t win a primary, leading him to retire after 1 term if he won’t leave himself.

Being a Senator at all is a major accomplishment and nothing to scoff at! Very few Americans ever get there as politicians. He should be proud and take that career capstone then spend time working on his health for his and his family’s sake instead of being an extremely high stress environment that makes all his symptoms and problems so much worse (and that’s without the added pressure of running a statewide campaign).

Just say no, it’s really that simple and it’s been the GOP doctrine every single time a Democrat is in office. Time to give it to them to see how they like it. My other reaction to the Digest is that I wish there were a politically damaging way to make fun of idiocy like this from Buddy Carter in an ad, and it's too bad Americans are too ignorant and too many support any U.S. invasion if it doesn't take many U.S. lives:

"However, he sought to change that in February when he introduced a bill to allow the Trump administration to purchase Greenland from Denmark and rename it 'Red, White and Blueland.'"
