But the bigger difficulty is that this district, like all the seats on Long Island, is contained entirely within the NYC media market, which is the most expensive in the nation. And it's therefore unlikely that major outside groups like the DCCC or House Majority PAC would come to Avlon's aid given that this district is not on the road to a majority. (What I mean is, if NY-01 flips, a lot of other seats have as well.)
Avlon, at least, is a good fundraiser, so he should be able to get his name out on his own. But I think he also has a serious weakness that has plagued other candidates on eastern Long Island (like Perry Gershon), which is that he doesn't really have strong ties to the area. And this is one of those regions that is very conscious of the impact that folks from NYC have.
I've seen Avlon speak, and he comes across as bright, well informed about the issues.
On the flipside regarding NY-01 as being a Lean GOP district, Avlon's wife Margaret Hoover is the great-granddaughter of President Herbert Hoover. Hoover of course was a much different breed of Republican compared to where the GOP is today.
The bride, 31, will continue to use her name professionally. She is a political and media consultant in New York and a commentator on the Fox News Channel. She graduated from Bryn Mawr. From June 2004 to November 2005, she worked at the White House as the associate director of the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs.
She is a great-granddaughter of Herbert Hoover, the 31st president of the United States. She is on the board of overseers of the Hoover Institution at Stanford and on the board of the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library Association in West Branch, Iowa.
I haven't paid attention to Hoover's history at Fox so I can't comment.
That said, seems that Avlon and Hoover are another unique political power couple like James Carville and Mary Matalin (who is in the Libertarian Party these days last I checked).
She's in the Libertarian Party now? I felt that Carville and Matalin were able to be married because on some level, they consider politics a game. I don't, and could never be in a committed relationship with someone who supports an immoral party that hurts people.
Back in 2016 Matalin registered as a Libertarian. She gave complicated answers to basic questions as to why she chose not to remain in the GOP.
On the other hand, I found out over a year ago that Matalin is an animal rights activist. I would have never thought someone of her stature would be this way but then again, animal rights really shouldn't be partisan to begin with.

Is she still commentating on Fox? If so, what kind of line does she take, and is she arguably truthful?
