Obituaries: Former Rep. Kay Granger (R-TX), the first woman to serve as a Republican from Texas in Congress, has died at 83.
Granger, a trailblazing mayor of Fort Worth, was drafted by both parties to run for the city's seat in Congress in 1996. She held it for 28 years as a Republican, eventually rising to be a powerful chair of the House Appropriations Committee. She retired two years ago after reports of her living in a nursing home with dementia explained her absence from voting.
Re: the Chicago mayoral item - I find it so strange that candidates are jumping into races while also competing in their current election. I understand why of course with election cycles and everything, but it just doesn't sit well with me. Would be curious to hear others' thoughts.
VI-Gov, VI-Del: Longtime U.S. Del. Stacey Plaskett won the Democratic primary for governor of the Virgin Islands Saturday as former territorial Sen. Janelle Sarauw won the primary for her congressional seat.
Plaskett was expected to have a competitive primary with Lt. Gov Tregenza Roach due to her ties to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, but won convincingly by 15 points after former VPOTUS Kamala Harris campaiged for her. Sarauw defeated former U.S. Attorney Delia Smith.
Primary turnout was 48%, which is apparently high for the islands.
