I don't know too much about Torres specifically but, speaking as a New Yorker, a fair number of our politicians think they are hot shit, but are really hot house flowers. Also, even if Hochul is really unpopular come primary time, I would expect her to beat him.
I don't know if Torres is necessarily a great statewide candidate, but sticking by Hochul if she's really unpopular seems like some really misguided loyalty. The 2022 result was close enough to suggest that the general election won't be a slam dunk for her or maybe any Dem, and while the national circumstances will be different, pretending that Donald Trump is personally on the ballot running against her may not work either (assuming the GOP chooses fairly wisely, which is no sure thing.)

Yeah, she's not a strong candidate. I think Torres would likely be even worse in a general, but who knows for sure.
