Oh, I didn't know Jeff was based in Boston. Since I have some experience here, let me just clarify for the readers outside Eastern Massachusetts, the September 1 lease cycle in Boston is fucking brutal.
Due to the high concentration of universities, landlords basically consolidate all their properties to have annual leases that come up September 1, so an insane number of people are all moving at once. Moving services book out months ahead. There's always a scramble to try to coordinate with the people in the apartment (if the landlord lets you contact them) you're moving into to see if they'll be out early, since most of the time your lease ends at midnight 8/31 and you can't get into the new place until 9am or noon on 9/1. People often stay with a friend, or in their U-Haul, for a night or more.
In 2014 I moved into a less common June 1 lease apartment and paid $300 to movers. But it was a 15-month lease because the landlord wanted to get onto the September 1 cycle himself, and the next year, when I moved again, movers quoted me $1200 and said they'd have to put my stuff in storage Aug 26th and I'd get it back September 3rd. I also know people who had their movers cancel the day of because they overbooked themselves and some moves took longer than planned.

The silver lining of this is what we call "Allston Christmas" - lots of nice stuff gets left out for free on the curb due the number of people moving.
